Ainolnaim Azizol (b.1987) is a Malaysian pianist-composer, sound artist and scholar. He received his formal music education at the tender age of 9 and obtained ATCL in piano performance at age of 17 and later a degree studies in piano performance and pedagogy at the University of Science Malaysia (USM) where he also has been actively involved in learning and performing Malay traditional music with local traditional music ensemble as accordionist and gamelan performer (gendang and saron). As for composing, Ainolnaim had gained a Master Degree in Music Composition (minoring Music Technology) at the Birmingham Conservatoire, UK under the guidance of Simon Hall, Ed Bennett, Geoff Hann and among others. After graduating, he gained on working experience as gamelan tutor at the National Department of Cultural and Arts Pahang (Malaysia) as well piano tutor and chamber orchestra instructor for various organisations. He was also an in-house music composer for local animation series Upin & Ipin at Les Copaque Production from 2012 to 2013 before joining the music composition department, Faculty of Music Universiti Teknologi MARA Malaysia in 2014 as full-time academic staff Malaysia teaching music degree students on fundamentals of composition, music theory 2, music theory 3, counterpoint and tonal structure, electronic music, digital audio recording, music technology, music production and seminar in composition I-II.
Ainol has written a range of compositions and most of his works consist of both local and non-local traditional elements in contemporary-style music for media and non-media works. He had participated in the International Music Institute Darmstadt Summer Course 2012 where he had world premiere his piece C-lat in Cage+ Project and lessons with Brian Ferneyhough, Claus-Steffen Mahnkopf, Georges Arpeghis and Hildegard Westerkamp. He was further recognized as a composer when some of his music has gained several places in music composition competitions such as 2nd Prize Asian Composers League (ACL) Young Composer Award in Yokohama Japan 2014 and 3rd Prize Flauto Dolce Composition Competition 2016, Lausanne, Switzerland. Since 2012, his works have been premiered in Germany, UK, Switzerland, Italy, Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and the US for international festivals such as New York City Electroacoustic Music Festival (NYCEMF) 2021, Linux Audio Conference Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA) Standford University, MA/IN MATERAMEDIA Festival 2019 Italy, Acht Brücken Music Festival 2012 composition competition finalist WDR3, Cologne, Germany and more. He had collaborated with various professionals and institutions from different fields for academic research funding and industrial project development such as the Brigstow Institute UK, Bristol Interaction Group (BIG), Bristol Open Doors Festival, The Japan Foundation Kuala Lumpur, Goethe Institute Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), Roland Asia Pacific (Malaysia), Yamaha Music Malaysia and R&D Studio including renowned ensembles such as Ensemble Mosaik, Asasello Quartet, and Kayafatilah Gamelan Ensemble, just to list a few. Since 2017, Ainol has published academic papers in indexed journals and conferences such as Malaysian Journal of Music (previously known as Malaysian Music Journal), International Music and Performing Arts Conference (IMPAC) 2016 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris, Malaysia and Electroacoustic Music Studies (EMS) Network Conference 2021, De Montfort University, Leicester, UK.
Currently, he is a PhD candidate at the University of Bristol funded by the Graduate Excellence Program (GrEP) MARA 2019 scholarship for four years doctoral studies in electroacoustic soundscape composition supervised by Prof. Neal Farwell and Prof. Michael Ellison and had attended academic and creative-technical courses held by Prof. Emeritus Barry Truax, Natasha Barrett, Locus Sonus and more.
